Cantrel rebrand as CANVYR to cut through the noise: “Same band, just a bigger vision.”

After building momentum on stages across South Africa with a fast-rising Nirvana tribute and a growing catalogue of original material, Cantrel have changed their name to CANVYR; a deliberate move to cut through digital noise and take control of how the band is found, heard and positioned going forward.

South African father-and-son outfit Cantrel have officially rebranded as CANVYR (pronounced Canver), announcing the change on their social media.

AFRICA.ROCKS reached out to Neil and Jesse Breytenbach to understand the reasoning behind the change. They said the decision was driven by ongoing confusion around the name “Cantrel”, which is close to other artist names and surnames online. As a result, search results and discoverability were being split. The move to CANVYR, a made-up word, is intended to give the band a more distinct and searchable identity across platforms.

The change comes as the band continues to build momentum on stage, particularly through their Nirvana tribute set, which grew from a single jam on “Come As You Are” into a full set of around 25 Nirvana songs performed across multiple shows. Alongside that, they have also been part of platforms like Wacken Metal Battle Africa.
