Réunion Island death metal trio Kaldeira have premiered the official video for ‘Martyr Island’ today, 23 September.
The song is the fourth track on the band’s latest album, Fournaise, and takes its subject from the history of slavery on Réunion. Kaldeira describe it as the story of a dream experienced by a local enslaved person, placing the listener inside a world of physical punishment, fear and resistance. Its lyrics shift between English, French and Réunion Creole.
Slavery formed part of Réunion’s colonial history for generations, particularly through the plantation economy. It was abolished on the island on 20 December 1848, a date that remains commemorated in Réunion as Fèt Kaf, marking both abolition and the island’s cultural inheritance from enslaved populations.
The ‘Martyr Island’ video was directed by M. Fredo Moutoumodely, with Sébastien Cahmi serving as producer. Le Prisme handled editing and Sapeli Music production management. The cast includes Mathias Vienne, Loran Maryan, François-Xavier Marquet, David Fringue and Cédric Quéré.
Fournaise was released in October 2025 and marked the first full-length issued under the Kaldeira name. The group emerged from The Hill Is Burning, with the change of name coming in 2025 as the musicians moved towards a more direct and faster death metal sound. The album itself had begun taking shape the previous year, when the band started working with producer Sébastien Cahmi at Artmusic Studio.
‘Martyr Island’ is available now through Kaldeira’s official YouTube channel.
