The Medicine Dolls have released a new single and video, “Tip The Waitress”, now out on Just Music. The Cape Town four-piece has built its name on a mix of punk, rock ‘n’ roll and dark glamour, and the new track stays close to that line.
Formed in 2018 by frontwoman Gory Guttersnipe and bassist Bex Knickerless, the group later rounded out with guitarist Slava Nikonov and sticks-wielder Callula Jane Clay-Smith. Since then, they’ve crafted a universe fueled by sweaty club chaos, kitsch, grime, and theatrical flair, all while keeping the jagged bits intact.
You can hear some of their touchstones in the background. There are flashes of The Cramps, The B-52s, Nina Hagen and Ashnikko in the way they handle attitude, rhythm and character, but “Tip The Waitress” still sounds like their own thing.
The video was directed by South African filmmaker Ryan Kruger, whose work on projects including Fried Barry made his name well beyond Cape Town.
“Tip The Waitress” was recorded at Atomic Studios in Cape Town with long-time collaborator Matthew Fink.
