Wacken Metal Battle Africa 2026 lands in Mozambique with Maputo heat at Gil Vicente

Maputo’s underground is about to plug directly into the world’s biggest metal battle circuit. The official Wacken Metal Battle Africa 2026 Mozambique heat is locked in for Saturday, 28 February 2026, hosted at Gil Vicente Café Bar in Maputo.

Wacken Metal Battle Africa’s 2026 season is heading into Maputo, with the Mozambique heat confirmed for Saturday, 28 February 2026 at Gil Vicente Café Bar. Doors are set for 18:00 (6pm CAT).

It’s a tight battle night: Ectogenesis and Dark Necropoly are the two bands announced for the qualifying showdown, the kind of pairing that doesn’t need a long build-up, because the point is simple: show up, play hard, and take the slot.

The bill also leans into the bigger story behind these heats, with Hilliker billed as special guests (listed as 2025 finalists) and Sunken State returning to the circuit as guests too (listed as Wacken Metal Battle Africa 2024 winners).

If you’re new to how this works, Wacken Metal Battle isn’t just a local battle-of-the-bands with a famous name stuck on it. It’s an official international contest (running since 2004) connected to Wacken Open Air, built to push emerging metal acts onto bigger stages.

In the African setup, the path is clear: local heats (like this Maputo date) feed into the Wacken Metal Battle Africa Finals in Johannesburg, and the African winner earns the chance to represent the continent at the Global Metal Battle in Hamburg, Germany, against winners from other regions.

There are also a few rules: bands must be unsigned (no existing record deal) and must be able to deliver a 30-minute set of original material (no covers). And yes, it’s the underground reality check where bands are responsible for their own travel and related costs through the process.

Maputo’s heat is one of those nights that’s bigger than the lineup on paper. It’s a local room, local volume, local sweat, but with a direct line out of the city and into an international circuit. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to throw yourself back into a pit, this is a good one.
