Overthrust have released a new lyric video for “Infected by Myth”, with the visuals created by Brazil’s Shaumbra ArtVisuals.
The subject fits closely with the ideas running through the Ghanzi band’s 2024 album of the same name. Across Infected by Myth, Overthrust deal with death, false preachers and religion used as a means of control, subjects that have long appeared in their old-school death metal.
Explaining the meaning behind “Infected by Myth”, the band wrote:
“The song is about losing common sense and self-reliance while waiting for a miracle to solve life’s problems instead of taking action to improve your situation. The idea of ‘miracle money’ is one clear example of how deception can exploit people’s hopes and desperation.
“The album was heavily influenced by what happened across Africa over the past decade, with the rapid rise of modern religious organisations, some of which became associated with deception, manipulation and exploitation. People were persuaded to surrender their hard-earned money and assets with promises of miracles, healing and a better life, yet their circumstances often remained unchanged.”
Infected by Myth was recorded between Milestone Studios in Cape Town, South Africa, and Farmadelica Sound in Pine Island, Florida. The eight-track album was produced and engineered by Jethro Harris and Howard “Merlin” Wulkan, with mastering by Paul Hird in California.
Overthrust formed in Ghanzi in 2008 and have become one of Botswana’s longest-running and most internationally visible death metal bands, including touring outside Africa.
The new lyric video is available now online.
