Wacken Metal Battle Africa reaches its 2026 final on 6 June 2026 at Sognage in Johannesburg, South Africa. After 13 heats and showcases across the continent, 13 bands have been confirmed for the final, with one winner set to move forward and represent Africa at the global Wacken Metal Battle stage in Germany.
The final brings together one of the broadest African lineups in the competition’s recent history. Angola will be represented by Dikamba, Mozambique by Ectogenesis, Kenya by Chovu, Botswana by Remuda and Nigeria by Lovesick. South Africa’s finalists are Imperious Vision, Fading Gray, Human Nebula, Diverted Disorder, MoshMallow, The Fallen Prophets, Thégøràth and Betty’s Nuklear.
Wacken Metal Battle is the international band competition connected to Wacken Open Air, giving selected bands from different countries and regions a route toward the global final. For Africa, the Johannesburg final decides which band carries the continent into that wider competition.
The Sognage final brings together bands who usually work in separate scenes, countries and touring circuits. For many of them, this is one of the few stages where those different parts of African metal meet in the same room. The scale of the finalist list also shows how Wacken Metal Battle Africa has grown into a wider continental platform, with bands from Nairobi, Luanda, Maputo, Gaborone and Lagos standing alongside several South African finalists.
The night will also include three special guests. Dark Necropoly from Mozambique and Vigljós from Switzerland join the bill, while Halvar, the South African band who won the 2025 African title, return as special guests after earning their own route to Wacken through last year’s competition.
