Botswana’s Sedimo invoke ancestral spirits on ‘Revenge of Badimo’

The Maun trio draw on ancestral identity, memory and Setswana spirituality for their latest dose of extreme metal.

Botswana extreme metal band Sedimo have released ‘Revenge of Badimo’, a track built around ancestral identity, inherited memory and the spiritual traditions that have shaped the group’s concept from the beginning.

Formed in Maun in 2025, Sedimo describe their music as African ancestral thrash death metal, combining extreme metal with African spirituality, ancestral storytelling, traditional rhythms and cultural mythology.

The title refers to Badimo, a Setswana term for ancestors or ancestral spirits. Within Batswana belief systems, Badimo remain connected to the living and occupy an important place in ideas surrounding family, community and spiritual life. For Sedimo, that connection is at the centre of the new song: “Badimo represent our African ancestors, our roots, our identity and the spiritual heritage that existed long before modern systems tried to define who we are,” the band explain.

‘Revenge of Badimo’ imagines those ancestral voices rising again after generations of silence. Its lyrics move through forgotten graves, abandoned sacred lands and the accumulated pain carried across generations, with the ancestors eventually returning to demand recognition.

“The inspiration behind this song comes from the feeling that when an African person reconnects with their ancestral identity, something powerful awakens,” Sedimo say. “It is about remembering the voices, strength, struggles and wisdom of those who came before us, and confronting what has been lost, forgotten or taken away.”

The single was released on 4 September 2026. Mixing and mastering were handled by Mwango Lunda in Zambia.

‘Revenge of Badimo’ is available now through SEDIMO’s Bandcamp page, with streaming and high-quality digital download available directly from the band.
