South African outfit We Kill Cowboys have returned with a new standalone single, “Year Of The Snake”. The track was developed inside the band’s rehearsal space after guitarist Floris brought in the first structure of the song. From there, the arrangement was worked through collectively with the rest of the band, eventually becoming one of the more personal tracks the group have released so far.
Vocalist Alex Muller described the writing process as unusually direct once the instrumental version had taken shape: “This song is a spell,” Muller said. “The lyrics came through within 35 minutes of sitting down. It was a channel.”
According to the band, the song deals with self-love, trust and personal transformation. Muller said the lyrics were built around the idea of consciously moving away from old habits and stepping into a different state of mind: “This is about choosing love in its highest form,” she explained. “Unconditional love for ourselves and then for the world. It’s about truly stepping into a new paradigm and allowing all that goodness in. That all starts with self-love and trust in our higher self.”
The process also pushed Muller into unfamiliar territory creatively: “It’s out of my comfort zone to write once a song is in its full form, which is so fitting with what the song’s about.”
The single is now available alongside an official lyric video.
