“ambitious yet grounded”

Following the release of their debut Dark Matter Manifesto in May 2025, Tunisia’s Primordial Black return with Heterotopia, a record that marks a clear step forward in focus, ambition, and execution.

While their debut leaned on raw intensity and aggression, this new effort is more refined without losing power. The band blends blackened death metal with avant-garde elements, letting dissonance, melody, and chaos coexist naturally.

The album opens with the eerie instrumental “Caos Guidato”, recalling the sinister tone of memorable 1990s extreme metal. That atmosphere continues with “Ruines Suspendues”, whose heavy drumming and drive show a band operating with far greater confidence. The technical growth is undeniable, and the collaboration with legendary bassist Steve DiGiorgio on “Immaculate” reinforces their ambitions. Given his influence on Primordial Black, it’s a meaningful and deserved feature.

What makes Heterotopia especially atractive is its sense of place. It carries an organic nature that reflects its origins: you can feel the heat, dust, and history of the Middle East through its sound and visuals, and nothing feels artificial. In a country where metal remains far from mainstream acceptance and can lead to trouble, every creative decision seems deliberate and culturally aware.

Ultimately, Heterotopia finds Primordial Black shedding their old skin and emerging sharper and deadlier. It is ambitious yet grounded, aggressive without repetition, and respectful of its influences while carving its own voice with refreshing touches. Bravo, ya shabab!
