The New Land marks the rebirth of Algerian groove metal band DUSK after more than two decades of silence. The five-track EP packs great potential, so here’s what to expect from their comeback.
Musically, the EP is built on a foundation of heavy, raw and unpolished guitar work. The riffs themselves lean into accessible, old-school heavy metal traditions rather than over-complicated technicality; they are undeniably catchy, even if they occasionally border on repetitive. The true highlights, however, are the guitar solos that inject a burst of impressive technique and melodic flair into the band’s headbanging groove metal hooks and evoke the sudden intensity of Pantera’s solos.
DUSK hail from Algiers, but listeners shouldn’t expect traditional Maghrebi or North African influences. There are no ethnic percussion instruments or Arabic lyrics to be found on this EP.
That global sound extends to the themes they address. DUSK look at the bigger picture, diving into the universal psychological struggles that define all of humanity. As vocalist Redouane Mostefaoui said in an interview with AFRICA.ROCKS back in June 2026, DUSK write primarily about ‘human psychology and the darkest aspects of human nature.’
On The New Land, DUSK don’t beat around the bush; their lyrics can be dark yet simple and direct, contrasting the gloom with a more optimistic philosophy on life, as heard on ‘Fall and Rise’. Driving these themes home is a solid, well-executed vocal balance that shifts between aggressive growling and clear, melodic singing. Think Megadeth with a deeper, angrier roar.
Overall, The New Land is a rock-solid comeback effort. I’d say stay tuned for DUSK’s upcoming album, Man Made Monster, especially since their recent signing with Darkside Records. They are well on their way to refining their sound and musical identity for a wider metal audience.
