Kenyan punk band Powerslide have released their rendition of Gorillaz’ “Feel Good Inc.”, joined by Liberian-American rapper Moeazy and Congolese guitarist Bingi.
The recording brings together several strands of a younger African alternative music scene. Powerslide’s Willy Ojiro produced, recorded, mixed and mastered the track, with Moeazy handling the rap section and Abednego Bingi contributing the guitar solo.
The original “Feel Good Inc.” was released by Gorillaz in 2005 as the lead single from their second album, Demon Days, with De La Soul appearing on the track. Powerslide’s version forms part of the sessions for their forthcoming album LOVE, which has already seen the band working with several other musicians.
Speaking exclusively to AFRICA.ROCKS, Powerslide explain why the song made sense for the new record and how Moeazy and Bingi became involved.
“Feel Good Inc. is a song that everyone loves, and I thought it would be fun to do a rendition of it for our upcoming album titled LOVE. We’re collaborating with Moeazy on the rapping and Bingi on the guitar solo. We collaborated with 20 More Days and Samora Ogeda-Chemba on our two previous singles. Moeazy is from the Kenyan skate scene, just like we are, so a collaboration between us was bound to happen. Bingi has worked with us on two other tracks from our previous album, Sexy Raccoon and Crash Into You, and working with him is always a lovely experience. Gorillaz don’t have one fixed style or sound. They can switch between several genres in one song, and they’re never afraid to get experimental. The same is true of Powerslide. We’re always trying to take our music to a place it’s never gone before.”
‘Feel Good Inc.’ featuring Moeazy and Bingi is available now on streaming platforms.
