“The production level here is quite impressive for a band that released this record on their own and as their debut.”
Gorebarth are not here to mess around. Hailing from Cape Town, South Africa, the band displays a technical death metal style that is often attempted but not as often effective due to oversaturation.
Luckily for Gorebarth, they have the chops and technical proficiency necessary to do this type of music justice. Bands like Virvum, First Fragement, and Inferi come to mind as comparisons. If you like those bands, there’s a good chance there will be something here for you to enjoy.
From a songwriting standpoint the changes are fluid and effective, the vocals guttural and impactful while maintaining at least some audible qualities. In other words, it’s not gurgling gore-grind style vocals, which is a plus.
The production level here is quite impressive for a band that released this record on their own and as their debut. It’s very listenable, and tracks like “Involuntary Cyborgification” and the title track really showcase the brutal yet wizard-like tech vibe, while “Rusted Guillotine” has an eerie melodic intro that evokes classic death metal from bands like Sinister.
Overall this is a very promising release that already is enjoyable. With their next release, the realistic expectation would be to raise the songwriting and production levels a bit to help set them apart from the pack. Being only one album in, they show plenty of promise to get there.
