Botswana death metal band Overthrust have introduced Deon Ntshabang, also known as Neverdie, as their new rhythm guitarist.
The 22-year-old musician, from Motopi, officially joined the band on 10 February 2026, but his arrival comes after months of training and rehearsals before Overthrust were ready to announce him publicly.
The process began after the band opened auditions for a rhythm guitarist in November 2025. According to Overthrust, several musicians showed interest and some sent audition videos, although they did not attend the subsequent physical auditions.
Frontman Tshomarelo “Vulture Thrust” Mosaka then remembered a young musician who had attended secondary school in Maun with guitarist Zehst Thrustt. Zehst had previously taught Ntshabang some of the basics of guitar, leading Mosaka to contact him and his family.
Although Ntshabang had only limited guitar experience at the time, the band say his enthusiasm, commitment and willingness to learn convinced them to give him the opportunity. He was also already a devoted Overthrust fan.
For his first two months with the group, Zehst worked closely with him on the fundamentals of the instrument and the parts required for Overthrust’s material. Drummer Balatedi “Beast Thrust” Folai then took over the next stage of his training, focusing on timing and playing alongside live drums.
The final test came when Ntshabang joined the full band on stage for the first time.
“Last week, Deon played with the full Overthrust line-up on a big stage, experiencing a much bigger sound and environment than the small rehearsal space he had been accustomed to,” the band said. “He played well, and Overthrust Management was satisfied with his progress, dedication and commitment throughout the journey.”
Based in Ghanzi, Overthrust have been active since 2008 and play old-school death metal influenced by bands including Deicide, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Immolation and Obituary. Their catalogue includes Freedom in the Dark, Desecrated Deeds to Decease, Suicide Torment, Demon Grave and their latest full-length, Infected by Myth, released in 2024.
The band followed Infected by Myth with the single ‘Pastor Skull’ in August 2025, recorded at Paradigm Recording Studio in Cape Town.
Overthrust have also remained active on the road. Earlier this year, they took their long-running Winter Metal Mania beyond its traditional format with a four-date Botswana tour through Tlokweng, Letlhakane, Ghanzi and Maun, joined by Swiss black metallers Vígljós, UK band Human Leather and several Botswana acts.
