Overthrust are not a new name popping up out of nowhere. The band come from Ghanzi, Botswana, have been active since 2008, and have spent years carrying their old-school death metal well beyond home ground, including multiple European runs and a slot at Wacken Open Air in 2016. Their latest full-length, Infected by Myth, followed a long road that started as a hobby and slowly turned into one of Botswana metal’s most visible names.
This time the update came from the rehearsal room. Posting online after a weekend session in Gaborone, the band said they had “a brutally intense rehearsal” at Cendis Medupi’s place, describing it as “a real anger-management session of pure sonic violence” and adding that “neighbors literally crushing the gate just to witness the chaos.” They also made it clear that new music is on the way.
The band called it “our extremely ugly, old-school Death Metal, dirty raw and dangerous sound of Overthrust,” which tells you enough about the spirit of it before the new track even settles in. The song they chose to preview is called “Hammered by Hate”, and if this first glimpse is anything to go by, Overthrust are not backing away from the filth and force that got them here in the first place.
